I'm sure the company line is something that sounds like "We want to combat our supposed East Coast bias." However, I think something more nefarious is afoot.
They're doing it to more directly tell the West Coast how great the New York and New England teams are.
This is just great marketing. Suppose you live in LA. You think, "Gee, ESPN cares so much about me that they sent their flagship show here! I think I'll watch," and you do, and then you see Mets, Yankees, and even for some reason Knicks highlights leading the package every night. Then, before you know it, you care as much about Derek Jeter's inability to field ground balls to his right as you do about Al Davis' inability to field a real life NFL team.
Spread the gospel, Stan Verrett. Spread the gospel.
Nah, as someone in the journalism field.... I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the time zone. I can't figure out why any news company (including mine) are based on the eastern time zone (Atlanta). Because then people working sports events late have to stay up til' friggin 3am waiting for stupid west coast games to end.
I have a very hard time believing that this was done to improve the work hours of a handful of ESPN employees.
And while Robb's post makes me laugh, I bet it's half right. I wouldn't be surprised if they think that doing this will make ESPN more 'credible' in the eyes of CA viewers. When I lived out there, I was actually kind of surprised by how much of a sense of "we're in our own political, professional, and sports worlds" existed.

It makes sense to move to LA.
